FMB Builders in East Yorkshire: Why Accreditation Matters When Choosing a Builder

With so many builders to choose from, accreditations offer a useful shortcut. They do not guarantee everything will go smoothly, but they do tell you something meaningful about the contractor you are considering. Here is what the main accreditations in the building industry actually mean.

Federation of Master Builders (FMB)

The FMB is the largest trade association for SME builders in the UK. Membership is not automatic: applicants are assessed against standards for quality, safety, and business practice. FMB members must also adhere to a code of practice and have access to a dispute resolution service. For residential clients in particular, FMB membership is one of the most useful indicators that a builder takes their work seriously.

NHBC (National House-Building Council)

NHBC registration is relevant specifically for new build homes. An NHBC-registered builder can offer the Buildmark warranty, which provides 10-year structural protection for new build properties. For buyers of new build homes or clients commissioning self-builds, NHBC registration is worth looking for.

SafeContractor

SafeContractor is an accreditation that assesses a contractor's health and safety management systems. It is particularly relevant for commercial and industrial clients who need confidence that the contractor they appoint meets the health and safety requirements of their site. Many large businesses and public sector clients require SafeContractor accreditation as a condition of appointment.

What accreditations do not tell you

Accreditations are a starting point, not a complete answer. They tell you that a builder has met a baseline standard at the time of assessment, but they do not tell you how the team works on site, how they communicate with clients, or how they handle problems when they arise. References from previous clients, a portfolio of completed work, and a face-to-face conversation with the people who will actually be running the project are all more revealing than accreditations alone.

Harlands Builders accreditations

Harlands Builders is a registered member of the Federation of Master Builders, a registered NHBC house builder, and holds SafeContractor approval. We are also members of the Institute of Carpenters. We have held these accreditations because we believe in the standards they represent, not because our clients require them as a tick-box exercise.
